CHAPTER TWELVE

Noah was awakened at first dawn by Grayson and after a quick breakfast they were on their way again. The trio had travelled most of the night and stopped to rest in a secluded bluff of trees. Aloria and Grayson took turns keeping watch and even though Noah offered to take a shift, they both refused him. He realized that they didn't think that they could rely on him. He didn't blame them though, they were right. Noah hadn't done anything to gain their confidence.

Their travel was slow as Aloria elected to stay away from the main roadways and they made their way through the backcountry instead. The horses had difficulty navigating the dense foliage, but Aloria didn't seem concerned with their speed of travel. They stopped at noon to rest the horses and to have a quick meal.

"We'll travel to the outskirts of Grimstad this afternoon and camp there tonight." Aloria said as they ate.

"We're not going into the village there?" Noah asked.

"Maybe for supplies, but that's all. Grimstad isn't the kind of place that you want to frequent very often."

"Thieves and criminals tend to migrate to Grimstad." Grayson added as he had noted the puzzled look on Noah's face. "It's far enough from Callendor that they think that they can disappear and escape their punishment for the crimes that they have committed."

"That's why we're staying off the main roads and out of sight. Three wayward travelers might seem like easy prey for criminals frequenting this area."

"From what I saw in Myhr, I think that they would be in for a rude awakening if they crossed paths with you two." Noah said with a grin but stopped when he noted Aloria's stern look.

"Perhaps," she replied, "but we don't want to draw any attention to ourselves."

They sat in silence for several moments as they ate their food. Noah could feel Aloria watching him and while he tried to ignore it, she made him uncomfortable when she did so. He knew that she was still looking for some sign of Armedious emerging from him and he wondered how much longer he had before she would give up on him.

"What's the plan once we reach this Grimstad?" Noah asked in an attempt to break Aloria's gaze. "Are we going to wait for Roloff and Khaill or are we just trying to stay one step ahead of the Black Legion?"

"First and foremost, we keep you safe," Grayson said as he wiped his hands clean on his shirt, "but there is someone who lives near Grimstad that might be able to help us figure out what has happened to you."

"They're not a fortune teller, are they?" Noah wondered out loud.

"A what?"

"Nothing."

"Her name is Rumohr." Grayson said after a moment. "Some believe that she crosses between our world here and the afterlife. She can see things that others can't and possesses magic of the old world."

"Sounds interesting." Noah shuddered as he recalled his encounter with the ghosts of the Mancu Forest. "You've met her then?"

"No, she is like a myth out of folklore.
